SEFERIS
What started as a behind the scenes commission for a documentary by the renowned director Andreas Pantzis, quickly developed into a powerful series of images drenched in atmosphere and emotion, telling the story of life in divided Cyprus. In 2008, Shacola set out to follow the landscape that was so colorfully featured in the Nobel prize-winning Greek poet, George Seferis', poems and photographs. What began as an artistic pilgrimage became a turbulent and emotional road trip through the northern part of Cyprus. Historical and cultural monuments that were once points of inspiration for the famous poet were seen vandalized, stark reminders of the of the 1974 invasion by Turkey. Simultaneously, the unspoiled land and authenticity of the people whom were met along the way acted as a small reminder of why the famous poet, Seferis, was so intrigued by the island in the 1950’s.
The photographs appeared in an exhibition during the first viewing of the film in Cyprus; 'Giorgos Seferis, the Poet in the Land of Eclipse.'
