Two trips in 2000 and 2003 concluded in a series of images that outline the ambiguous portrait of a country during conditions of economic isolation. Fidel Castro's Cuba, long before the restoration of diplomatic relations with the US, is revealed through harsh everyday life and the citizen's passion for life and unwavering spirit and determination to thrive. The Cubans Shacola met took her in to their homes, and through the eyes and life experiences of a salsa dancing couple she met during her first trip and later of national athlete; Yumilka Ruiz, Shacola managed to put together some of the puzzle pieces regarding the turbulent lives of these fascinating and enduring people.
